About Us

Davison Hardwood Quality Specialists was founded in 1987 and incorporated as Davison H.Q.S., Inc. in 1991 by Joseph D. Davison, Jr. Davison H.Q.S., Inc. was established as a hardwood log dealership and timber management consultant. Today, we focus our attention to buying quality hardwood logs and providing producers with these logs for manufacturing. While the majority of our logs are processed in domestic mills through out the United States, the finished products are used world wide.

We are located in the heart of Indiana which has long been known for its rich resource of hardwood timber. 98 percent of Indiana's forests are hardwood forests with oak and hickory forest accounting for 32 percent of the 13 different forest types within the state. According to a summary of the 1998 Forest Inventory by the U.S. Forest Service 40+ percent of Owen County, home of Davison H.Q.S., Inc., consists of forest land. The same 1998 Inventory shows the area of Indiana forest land has steadily increased since the 1960's. Almost 2 billion trees, not including seedlings and saplings, are growing in Indiana. That's 340 trees for each citizen in the state. Indiana is growing 2 1/2 times more timber than is being harvested.

Our Facility and Yard

Davison H.Q.S., Inc. is nestled between the White River, rolling Hoosier farmlands, and thriving forest land. Just down the road is the beauty of McCormick's Creek State Park.

Our yard consists of two levels. The lower level is used primarily in the spring and summer seasons because of the protection it offers to the logs from the heat and direct sun. In addition to the natural shade provided from standing timber we use Shade-Dri tarps. Heat from the sun can cause premature drying that causes checking and splitting. The Shade-Dri helps hold the coolness created by the evaporation process in and reduces the heat from the sun. In addition the Shade-Dri can help reduce the risk of enzymatic stain in white wood logs.

The upper level also houses our main building which contains the office, shop, and kiln dried lumber storage area. We have converted the corn crib into more area for air drying and storing lumber. A small addition to our main building now houses the portable bandmill owned and operated by Wayne Broadfield.

Our Methods of Shipment

Davison H.Q.S., Inc. is located beside a railroad which offers one method of transporting logs to a variety of locations. The majority of our shipment is done through trucking using subcontractors to haul the logs. For our customers that wish to have their logs manufactured overseas we also load containers for shipment.
