Harvesting Your Standing Timber

With 88% of Indiana's forest land owned among 190,000 private landowners it is the goal of Davison H.Q.S., Inc. to provide landowners with useful information for successful timber harvesting and timber management. Davison H.Q.S., Inc. has Indiana Licensed Timber buyers who work with the landowner to support Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) in our forest management practices. Best Management Practices (BMP) are also used by our logging subcontractors, which offers the greatest potential to reduce nonpoint source pollution (NPS) and reach water quality and other forest health goals.

Joe Davison, owner of Davison H.Q.S., Inc., received his degree in Forestry from Purdue University in Indiana. As a consulting forester Joe evaluates the landowner's standing timber keeping in mind the overall health of the trees and life span of the forest. We have an appreciation for the beauty and life that standing timber adds to your land and thus our desire is to create a forest generations to come can appreciate as well. At Davison H.Q.S., Inc. we use selective harvesting methods that best meet your desired outcome for the forestlands you own.

Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI)

The SFI program at large is made up of the following components.

SFI forest certification promotes responsible forestry practices. To be certified, forest operations across the United States and Canada must be audited against the SFI forest standard.

SFI chain-of-custody certification extends into the marketplace by tracking fiber content from certified lands through production and manufacturing to the end product. Consumers who buy products with the SFI “percent-content” label know they are buying assurance of well-managed forests.

SFI fiber sourcing requirements address the reality of global fiber markets and the fact that only 10 percent of the world's forests are certified. Program participants must ensure the raw material in their supply chain comes from legal and responsible sources, whether the forests are certified or not.

SFI labels are recognized globally and provide a visual cue to help customers source certified forest products.

SFI program requirements are audited by independent, third-party certification bodies to ensure they conform.

Nonpoint Source Pollution (NSP)

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, unlike pollution from industrial and sewage treatment plants, comes from many diffuse sources. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters, and even our underground sources of drinking water. These pollutants include:

We can all work together to reduce and prevent nonpoint source pollution. Some activities are federal responsibilities, such as ensuring that federal lands are properly managed to reduce soil erosion. Some are state responsibilities, for example, developing legislation to govern mining and logging, and to protect groundwater. Others are best handled locally, such as by zoning or erosion control ordinances. And each individual can play an important role by practicing conservation and by changing certain everyday habits.
